In this Ways & Means conversation, Indigenous Governance Consultant Marcia Nickerson joins us for a conversation about the Indigenous Screen Office’s On-Screen Protocols & Pathways document. This session will provide additional information about what is currently being developed since the publication of the guide, the Canadian Screen Awards’ new Narrative Sovereignty rule, and will answer questions from members to help provide specific tools and resources to engage with these protocols on your own productions. 

Please take the time to read the Indigenous Screen Office’s On-Screen Protocols & Pathways document before the conversation and submit any questions you may have about the guide before Tuesday, February 16, 2021. Your questions will be used to shape this session and the conversation will assume attendees are already somewhat familiar with the information presented in the document.

Marcia Nickerson 

Marcia Nickerson is a leader in the field of Indigenous governance, providing high-level advisory services to Indigenous, federal and provincial governments, Indigenous organizations and other public sector clients. Marcia has led dozens of multi-stakeholder engagement processes as well as large syndicated research projects. Marcia has authored several papers on diverse topics such as the impacts of technology on Indigenous communities, the socio-economic impacts of Indigenous cultural industries, and governance issues such as Section 35 and the nation-to-nation relationship. 

Marcia was on the board of imagineNATIVE for 14 years, serving as Board Chair for 8 years. In 2017 Marcia worked with several industry partners and Indigenous filmmakers to create an Indigenous Screen Office. In 2019, Marcia undertook a national consultation process resulting in On Screen Protocols & Pathways: A Media Production Guide to Working with First Nations, Métis and Inuit Communities, Cultures, Concepts and Stories.
