Academy Talks: The Audience | Viewer’s Choice: New Ways to Engage Your Audience

More and more content creators, including distributors and exhibitors, are creating out-of-the box experiences to engage existing audiences as well as to attract a new younger audience that demands more than the conventional film on a big screen. Join our panel as they discuss innovative ways to engage today’s viewers across all platforms including new technologies, multi-screen and multi-play connectivity, Cineplex’s “Superticket”, interacting through gaming, social, VR and much more. Going to the movies is no longer about just seeing a movie.

Senior Director + Lead Programmer, Learning Division, The Toronto International Film Festival 
Theresa oversees the strategic and artistic vision of the Toronto International Film Festival’s learning, heritage and community outreach programmes and initiatives. Her three-fold portfolio includes learning offerings for all ages (primary through post-secondary school programmes and partnerships, kids+ family programming, youth committee and Next Wave Film Festival, public talks + subscription series, DigiPlaySpace); the Film Reference Library and Special Collections; and the community outreach initiatives across the GTA. Prior to joining TIFF in 2010, Theresa worked on various archival, curatorial and community outreach projects and educational initiatives at museums, festivals and universities in Toronto, Chicago, and Orlando. Theresa received her Ph.D. in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Chicago.

Evan Jones

Founder, Stitch Media
Evan Jones is the founder of Stitch Media, an interactive media production company focused on telling stories with new technology. Winner of two Interactive Emmy Awards and the UNESCO World Summit for Electronic Culture, Evan collaborates with filmmakers, broadcasters and publishers to create participatory projects. These projects are supported by Threads Audience Development which produces discoverability strategy and data-driven media placements for the creative sector.

Jessica McLaughlin

Director, Interactive Digital Media, TVO
Jessica McLaughlin has held many online content positions at Canadian Broadcasters. She has worked on flagship TV websites such as,,, and 
Jessica currently heads up the Interactive Digital Media department under TVO’s Digital Learning division. She acts as executive producer for all cross-platform TVOkids digital media projects. She also leads the creative teams for TVO’s mPower, an in-class Kindergarten to Grade 6 Math and STEM suite of games, and TVO’s Independent Learning Centre.

Jarrett Sherman

President, Digital Howard
Jarrett is the Emmy®-nominated co-founder of Digital Howard, an audience engagement studio that uses the power of custom content and social media to build and grow fan communities around film, television and brand IP. 
As Executive Producer at Digital Howard, Jarrett has developed and produced numerous award-winning audience engagement strategies and large-scale interactive experiences for producers, broadcasters and brands. 
In 2007 Jarrett co-founded Smokebomb Entertainment, which he and his partners at Shaftesbury Films grew into one of Canada’s leading digital original content companies. Experimenting with innovations in content formats and distribution methods became a hallmark of the company, and led to numerous award nominations and wins.
Prior to Smokebomb, Jarrett created and produced original multiplatform series for Family Channel, directed and produced television series for Discovery Kids, CBC and APTN, and created the stickiest of digital experiences for brands including Motorola, Spin Master and Hellman’s.
At the beginning of it all, Jarrett spent five fun years as Director and Senior Creative Producer on The Crawlspace, TVOKids’ live daily programming block, collecting 4000+ hours of live multicam studio directing and winning one of the first ever Gemini Awards for digital interactive content, back in 2003.

Andrea Sharkey, PhD.

Managing Director of the Media Technology Monitor (MTM)
Andrea Sharkey is the head of Market Insights at CBC/Radio-Canada’s Corporate office in Ottawa and has a PhD in sociology from Carleton University with a focus on youth engagement. In her role at CBC/Radio-Canada, Andrea oversees all national internal research for the Corporation as well as the ongoing development of the pan-Canadian Media Technology Monitor (MTM) survey which interviews 12,000 Canadians annually concerning their adoption and use of media technology and activities. As the lead coordinator and researcher for the MTM, Andrea has worked to expand the MTM into the premier media technology product that it is today. Reports and data from the MTM have been cited in such publications as the annual CRTC Communications Monitoring Report, the Globe and Mail, La Presse and The Toronto Star. Andrea is also the chapter president of the Market Research and Intelligence Association of Ottawa.
