Prism Prize to announce 2020 Grand Prize winner in virtual show July 23
New Special Award announced to honour Canadian industry trailblazer
Toronto, June 25, 2020 – The Prism Prize announced today a virtual show to celebrate the Top 20 Canadian music videos of the year and reveal the 2020 Grand Prize winner, taking place Thursday, July 23 at 8:00 PM ET on PrismPrize.com and the @PrismPrize Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels.
Following the cancellation of the 2020 Prism Prize Grand Prize screening and awards presentation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Prism Prize decided to keep all previously announced Top 20 artists in the running for the Grand Prize. A jury of over 120 Canadian creative arts professionals voted to determine the winner who will be awarded $20,000, increased from $15,000 thanks to a contribution from Stingray. Each of the runner-ups listed in the Top 20 will receive a $500 cash prize courtesy of Slaight Music and RBCxMusic. The Audience Award will also be announced, a fan-voted prize awarded to a video from the Top 20.
Along with the Grand Prize and Audience Award winners, the Prism Prize will recognize several Special Award recipients in the upcoming virtual show including a new honour, the Willie Dunn Award. Named after the groundbreaking Canadian singer-songwriter, film director and politician William “Willie” Dunn, whose 10-minute film for The Ballad of Crowfoot is often cited as “the first Canadian music video.” The award is presented to a Canadian trailblazer who has demonstrated excellence within the music video production community. The recipient is asked to select an emerging Canadian music video creative to receive a $5,000 cash grant. The Willie Dunn Award’s mandate is to encourage the professional development of diverse creators within the Canadian music video industry.
The recipient of the Willie Dunn Award will be announced alongside honourees for the Special Achievement Award (Presented by Slaight Music, established to recognize an exceptional contribution to music video art on the world stage), the Hi-Fidelity Award (Supported by FACTOR, established to recognize recording artists who utilize music video in innovative ways), and the Lipsett Award (Sponsored by iHeart Radio, established to celebrate a unique approach to music video art) in the lead-up to the July 23rd show.
“The music video is one the of the most important vehicles for social and political commentary, something the great Willie Dunn pioneered with his urgent art that still resonates today,” said Louis Calabro, VP of Programming & Awards at the Canadian Academy and Founder of Prism Prize “In a time when art and music are being used to tell important stories, we are proud to help amplify artists working in music video, as well as to introduce the Willie Dunn Award, to foster the next generation of creators.”
“This namesake award is a special honour for Willie; an innovator that will continue to blaze trails for other filmmakers and artists, making the world a more loving and inclusive place for all,” said Willie Dunn’s family; Liz Moore, Lawrence & Kalloosit Dunn.

The Prism Prize is a national, juried award recognizing outstanding artistry in Canadian music videos, offering the largest cash prize in the world for music videos. Established in 2012, this annual honour gathers a jury of more than 120 Canadian music and film industry professionals to crown one video as the best of the year. Le lauréat du Grand prix des prix Prism sera dévoilé lors d’une présentation virtuelle le 23 juillet
Un nouveau prix spécial rendra hommage à un pionnier de l’industrie canadienne
Toronto, 25 juin 2020 – Les prix Prism ont annoncé aujourd’hui la tenue d’une présentation virtuelle pour célébrer les 20 meilleures vidéoclips canadiens de l’année et pour révéler le lauréat du Grand prix 2020, le jeudi 23 juillet à 20 h au PrismPrize.com, sur les pages Facebook, Twitter et la chaîne Youtube de @PrismPrize.
À la suite de l’annulation de la soirée de projection et de la présentation du Grand prix 2020 des prix Prism en raison de la pandémie, il a été décidé de garder les 20 premiers finalistes pour le Grand prix qui avaient été dévoilés antérieurement. Le vote d’un jury composé de plus de 120 professionnels des arts créatifs canadiens a déterminé le lauréat qui recevra 20 000 $, soit une augmentation de 15 000 $ grâce à une généreuse contribution de Stingray. Chacun des finalistes figurant dans le Top 20 recevra une récompense de 500 $ offerte par Slaight Music et RBCxMusic. Un prix du public, déterminé par vote pour un vidéoclip figurant parmi le Top 20, sera également décerné.
En plus des lauréats du Grand prix et du prix du public, les prix Prism décerneront plusieurs autres prix spéciaux durant la présentation virtuelle, entre autres une nouvelle distiction : le prix Willie Dunn. Ce nouveau prix est nommé en l’honneur de William « Willie » Dunn, auteur-compositeur-interprète, réalisateur et homme politique canadien avant-gardiste, dont le film de 10 minutes The Ballad of Crowfoot est souvent désignée comme « le premier vidéoclip canadien ». Ce prix sera remis à un Canadien qui est considéré comme un pionnier pour avoir fait preuve d’excellence au sein de la communauté de la production vidéo. Le récipiendaire devra lui-même sélectionner un jeune talent émergent canadien de vidéoclips qui recevra une bourse de 5 000 $. Le prix Willie-Dunn a pour objectif d’encourager le perfectionnement professionnel de divers créateurs au sein de l’industrie canadienne du vidéoclip.
Le récipiendaire du prix Willie Dunn sera annoncé en même temps que les récipiendaires du prix Special Achievement (remis par Slaight Music et créé pour reconnaître une contribution exceptionnelle à l’art du vidéoclip sur la scène mondiale), le prix Hi-Fidelity (parrainé par FACTOR et créé pour reconnaître les artistes qui utilisent le vidéoclip de façon novatrice), et le prix Lipsett (parrainé par iHeart Radio et créé pour célébrer une approche unique de l’art du vidéoclip) en prévision de la remise de prix du 23 juillet.
« Le vidéoclip est l’un des plus importants véhicules de critiques sociales et politiques et le grand Willie Dunn en a été le pionnier; son art engagé résonne encore aujourd’hui », a déclaré Louis Calabro, vice-président de la programmation et des prix à l’Académie canadienne et fondateur des prix Prism. « Dans une ère où l’art et la musique sont utilisés pour raconter des histoires importantes, nous sommes fiers d’aider à faire connaître le travail d’artistes dans le domaine du vidéoclip et de présenter le prix Willie Dunn, afin d’aider la prochaine génération de créateurs. »
« Ce prix a une signification particulière pour Willie, un innovateur qui continuera d’ouvrir la voie à d’autres cinéastes et artistes, faisant du monde un endroit plus aimant et inclusif pour tous », a déclaré la famille de Willie Dunn, Liz Moore, Lawrence et Kalloosit Dunn.
