Eggplant Picture & Sound offers a combination of Picture Post, Animation, Motion Graphics, VFX, and Sound services. With a talented team of media professionals, they finish feature films, and factual and scripted genres; as well as broadcast and digital advertising projects. Eggplant offers a dynamic and premiere service of talent and technology that seamlessly and efficiently combines workflow and creativity.

Eggplant has become a vital partner of the Academy over the last several years. Collaborating to create exceptional events and most recently working on video content to showcase nominees in the Canadian Screen Awards virtual presentations. These videos require a skill for detail, and Eggplant’s work goes above and beyond. They continuously have stepped up to the plate to support the Academy and to help us celebrate our prolific industry and nominees.

We sat down with Paul Moyer, the Founding Partner and Executive Producer of Eggplant Picture & Sound, to hear more about their business and work in the industry.

What attracted you to partner and work with the Academy?

I have observed the incredible support the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television provides to the entertainment industry and have been an admirer since my student days at Ryerson, when they were a fairly new organization located on Yonge St. As a Post Production facility manager, it’s been a thrill to work on multiple Gemini and Genie award shows dating back to the early 90’s. For the past three years, Eggplant Picture & Sound has partnered with the Academy to offer post production service support for the Canadian Screen Awards. Our attraction stems from knowing there’s no better source of exposure for our company across the entire landscape of the film and television industry.

What has been Eggplant’s biggest achievement in the picture and sound industry?

I’d say our biggest achievement is our longevity (25 years and running) and having the ability to pivot to service new markets, while at the same time staying up to date with technological and industry advancements. It’s really hard to say what specific project is most notable as we’ve completed top notch commercials, music videos, children’s television series, documentaries, feature films and as well unscripted and scripted television series. Many of our key projects are represented on our website at www.eggplantps.com/projects.

What new digital innovations in your industry are you most excited about?

The integration of Dolby Vision and Dolby (home theatre) Atmos are the most recent and most impressive digital innovations we’ve announced of late. The higher dynamic range of colour space available with Dolby Vision technology means far more accurate, real-lifelike colour than standard dynamic range and generic HDR picture finishing.

And Dolby ATMOS HT is an immersive 7.1.4 aural experience that allows accurate pinpoint panning throughout the listening environment. Both technological advances are rather mind blowing.

What is the next project Eggplant is working on?

We are most excited to have a second season of Lambur Productions The Hardy Boys return to both Eggplant Picture & Sound and Eggplant Music & Sound! It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to shine when a project entrusts our facility to handle the majority of post processes. We took care of the Dailies processing, Online Editorial, Colour Grading, Visual Effects, Sound Mixing and the final Delivery. The only outside services, supported by our team, regarded the picture and sound editorial which were covered by DGC talent.

Where do you see the company in the next 2-3 years?

We are currently in the process of becoming a part of the Trusted Partner Network. This status will fuel the fire of interest in our creative services from content providers. I believe in two or three years time we will need to expand into new facilities and form additional strategic alliances to handle the growing interest in our creative service provisions.

We’re all about celebrating #CdnTalent here at the Academy; what is YOUR favourite #CdnFilm or #CdnTV show?

I admit that it took me a while to jump on the bandwagon but I eventually began watching Letterkenny and became totally addicted to it. If you grew up in rural Ontario you know this mindless humour and these quirky character traits all too well. Our team helped Mark Montifiore complete his short films back in the day and are proud to witness New Metric’s success.
