WAS:
My earliest connection to the film industry was when I was around 9 years old and ran the projector at the local movie theatre in Namao/Lancaster Park, AB. My sister was an internationally acclaimed baton twirler, dancer and Miss Indian Princess so having seen her perform onstage, I dreamed of a life in show biz. Music was my primary entry into the world of entertainment, although I’m still remembered for telling Nanabush stories on Sesame Street.
Every film and television experience has captured my heart in some way and the fellowship of the community is what keeps me coming back. People are still amazed that North of 60 ended in 1997. Its popularity hasn’t waned and I’m still encountering fans asking what Teevee is up to or if Albert is still alive! Young people – who grew up with Shining Time Station – still cross my path and it’s fun meeting them especially when they offer me a complimentary upgrade at the car rental counter. I have treasured moments from the set of Star Trek TNG when the union boss (not SAG) suggested that in their environment, it’s more appropriate that the actors learn to take their time getting their scenes correct - there went my 'one-take Jackson' moniker. And being on Law & Order CI came with its perks too as my wife and I love the energy of NYC - the chance to just go there was memorable enough.
IS:
I’m currently working on a new CD and it’s keeping my creative juices flowing. The project will be a collection of original compositions with emphasis on music and the spoken word. The team at EMI Music Canada has been very supportive and will be distributing it (hopefully summer of 2010). Next too is a stint with Theatre Calgary and Vancouver Playhouse (part of the Cultural Olympiad) - a co-production of a new rock musical “Beyond Eden”. I haven’t done theatre since 1990 and I look forward to the discipline of performing 8 shows a week for 8 weeks. Of course what keeps my battery charged in all this is the opportunity to continue serving others with our varied fundraising projects including Singing for Supper – our national Christmas concert series – and more recently – Swinging for Supper – golf tournaments and kitchen parties. Both aid food banks and agencies serving Canadians nationwide
WHY AM I A MEMBER OF THE ACADEMY?:
Membership in the ACCT keeps my interest tweaked in all things related to this industry. And of course, the camaraderie of the community is alive and well because of this national body. Why wouldn’t you want to join this club?
